About the Artist

I received a student subway pass at the age of 12, and have been wandering around New York and other world cities ever since. I spent more than eight years in Tokyo, where a master conservator of historical lacquer artifacts allowed me to spend time observing his team’s work in exchange for translation services. Though I never touched a thing in the conservation studio, my attraction to those unusual tools and slow and painstaking processes developed into a penchant for complication that informs my work today.  My cityscapes make use of the uncertainties of etching and aquatint to shine a spotlight on less-noticed vistas, with details carefully selected to capture the look, feel, and sometimes even the sound of a particular time and place.
I often find faithfulness to the 'facts' to be inadequate in capturing these scenes in a print. By emphasizing or relocating various elements, I am better able to express the feeling of the scene and my reaction to it.
